GEORGE CHRISTAKIS

Professor

Dr. Christakis received his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1989 and graduated with honours. He completed his residency at the University of Toronto and completed two fellowships in Cardiovascular Surgery at Toronto General Hospital and at the University of Toronto. He was admitted as a Fellow in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons for Cardiovascular Surgery in 1989. He has served as a Consultant/ Staff Surgeon in the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre since 1990. He is also currently a Locum Surgeon at the Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario. He has served as Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto since 2004. He was recently appointed as the Director of the University of Toronto Undergraduate Medical Education.

A dedicated researcher and scientist, Dr. Christakis has been a Senior Scientist in the Heart and Circulation Program at Sunnybrook since 1997. He has been published in over a hundred peer-reviewed journals and more than a dozen books, chapters in books and proceedings. An avid lecturer, Dr. Christakis has given presentations across North America and around the world. He is the recipient of the University of Toronto’s, Bernie Goldman Teaching Award in the Department of Surgery in 2011; Co-winner of The Silver Shovel-Chute Teaching Award in 2013 and Peters Boyd Teaching Award for Clerkship Teaching in Surgery in 2013.

Dr. Christakis has received the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Research Scholarship six times during his career and has been a grant reviewer on the Heart and Stroke Foundation Scientific Review Committee for more than a decade.
