DAVID ARTHUR LATTER

Dr. Latter began his surgical career as an attending Cardiac Surgeon at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal.

In addition to practicing a range of general cardiac surgery, he also served as the Director of Heart and Lung Transplantation and has performed over 200 transplants during his six years in Montreal.

In 1996, Dr. Latter joined the Cardiac Surgery Staff at St. Michael’s Hospital and currently practices a wide range of Adult Cardiac Surgery.

Dr. Latter has since served as Chair of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Examination Board from (2001-2004), Program Director of the University of Toronto Cardiac Surgery Residency Program (2003-2009), Acting Chair of the University of Toronto Department of Surgery (2010-2011), Vice Chair of Education of the University of Toronto Department of Surgery (2008-2017), Vice-Chief of Surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital (2007-2017), Chair of the Fellowship Education Advisory Committee for the Postgraduate Medical Education Program at the University of Toronto (2009-2016), Chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery St. Michael’s Hospital (2011-Present), and Director, MD Admissions and Student Finances University of Toronto (2016-Present).

  • CLINICAL/RESEARCH INTERESTS

    • Dr. Latter specializes in adult cardiac surgery with a special interest in mitral valve repair surgery.
    • In association with his partners at St Michael’s Dr latter has engaged in clinical research defining optimal techniques for repair of the mitral valve (resection vs neo chords, CAMRA trial). Another clinical trial comparing innominate vs axillary cannulation for cerebral protection during hypothermic arrest periods during aortic arch surgery (ACE trial) is near completion. Dr latter’s other research activities have been as participants in meta-analysis of topical cardiac surgery issues.
    • Finally, Dr Latter is engaged in surgical trials of gene therapy for ischemic heart disease.
